Neil Ray likes to remind everyone that Fayetteville, NC is a "city of stars" and fewer statements have been more true. At the end of 2013 we debuted a monthly feature segment titled "Java Expressions: LIVE" in an effort to showcase the talents of our area's performing artists. This is a 90-minute spotlight that gives each poet or singer-songwriter a chance to put on a full display of their creativity and showmanship. Broadcasting from The Coffee Scene (Fayetteville) at 3818 Morganton Road, the material is ALL ORIGINAL and can be viewed LIVE, online for those that cannot make it to watch in person. Our next JE: LIVE is June 18th and will be bringing two familiar faces and one that may be new to some of our viewing audience.
First up is Rick Ramos. Rick is a singer-songwriter with a flair for storytelling. I first met Rick following my return to Java Expressions and always saw him as a songwriter who could bridge the gap between modern indie music audiences and an old school balladeer-style of writing & singing. Rick later joined Daniel Frady as the featured performers for another monthly broadcast that I hosted & produced, Local Musicians' Showcase. Rick started learning his craft later in life and is eager to test himself. Going from 3-song open mic performances to a 45-min feature on a 2hr broadcast proved tough but he kept the audience going and enjoyed every minute. Rick can be seen on the open mic scene as much as his work schedule as a Registered Nurse will allow, and it is obvious each time that he enjoys engaging the audience. You can learn a little more about Rick Ramos by checking out his submission to our blog HERE.
Now we come to our evening's spoken word artist. SpiritWolf is an accomplished slam poet and published author. His books "Wolf Bites" and "Out Of The Woods" are available on his website SpiritWolfPoetry.com. This poet has made great strides for someone who has been on the scene for a relatively short amount of time. As posted on his website, SpiritWolf began writing at the age of 9 and continued throughout his school years only to put the pen down for nearly two decades. In 2013 he rediscovered his love of poetry and eventually made his way into the competitive slam scene. SpiritWolf has since been recognized and nominated for awards several times by his fellow area poets. His most recent project, "Ten Words Towards Change", is a collaborative effort in conceptualization and writing. You can find out more by going to his website, checking out his "SpiritWolf" Facebook page HERE, or by going to the "Ten Words..." page HERE, also on Facebook.
We round out the showbill with another singer-songwriter. Someone who is (to me) a relative newcomer on the local music scene who's already making waves and sending out positive vibes. Ava Hart has a smokey-jazz voice that could resonate with music lovers of any genre. Whether acapella or accompanied by friends, there's no escaping her energy or vocal presence. Ava is often a late-night performer of the Monday Java Expressions event, Java Jams. She's been showing some versatility in collaborations with a number of names in the local music scene and has begun working a few gigs with Ergun Bicer, a classical guitarist/composer who has featured on earlier editions of JE: LIVE. If you haven't had the opportunity to see Ava perform yet, here's your chance. Just get ready, after one song you'll already be checking the calendar for her next gig.
You can catch these artists this Sunday, June 18th, on Java Expressions: LIVE at The Coffee Scene, 3818 Morganton Rd in Fayetteville, NC. The feature goes live at 8pm and will be broadcast on The Outlaw Poet Channel. If you are able to come watch in-person then you can also catch all of the other poets & musicians during our (off camera) open mic segments from 7-8pm & 9:30-11pm.
